Lowly entombed in India,
Close by the restless sea,
Lieth a dear heart sleeping
Under the mango tree;
Lieth a dear heart sleeping
Under the mango tree.
Gone in his life’s fair morning,
Gone with his earnest plea,
Telling the glad, sweet story
Under the mango tree,
Telling the glad sweet story
Under the mango tree:
Seeking for lambs that had wandered;
Telling of Jesus’ love;
Guiding their tender footsteps
Home to the Father above,
Guiding their tender footsteps
Home to the Father above.
Hushed is the voice that sounded,
(Hushed is the voice that sounded,)
Hushed in eternity;
(Hushed in eternity;)
Millions still yearn for its echo
Under the mango tree,
Millions still yearn for its echo
Under the mango tree.
* This poem was written and the music composed as a memorial to Jacob Burkbard, missionary to India. His fine spirit of self-sacrifice was shown in that, although the time for his furlough was over-due, he cheerfully bore the burden from which he should have been relieved, and in doing so succumbed to illness which under ordinary conditions would hardly have proved fatal. His tomb UNDER THE MANGO TREE was mentioned in a sermon by M.C. Lapp at Goshen College, May 31, 1908. The poem was written in January, 1909, and the music was composed in the following April.
